On Sunday, February 7, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers will compete for the NFL title in Super Bowl #55.
For fans, the most important day of the year, for a multitude of casual fans, however, an appointment not to be missed. And so – just for the benefit of those who perhaps do not follow football as a religion, here is a vademecum that may be useful.
Why is it called a Super Bowl?
The term Bowl is usually used for the end-of-season college football challenges. In the NFL the origin comes from an idea of Lamar Hunt, historical owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, who suggested to the then commissioner Pete Rozelle to call Super Bowl the first challenge between the winner of the American Football League and the winner of the National Footbal League, at that time two separate leagues. “I saw my children playing with a Super Ball and jokingly decided to name the game that way,” he said. And he added in a letter to Rozelle, “Clearly we can work on it and improve it.” Something that never happened.
Why are the various editions identified with Roman numerals?
Again, the idea came from Lamar Hunt, but it was used only from edition number 5, that is V. The only year in which it was not used was on the occasion of the 50th Super Bowl, since the L in the U.S. stands for Loss, or defeat. Or even losing.
Where was the first Super Bowl held?
Kansas City and Green Bay – whose re-edition we have touched this year -, challenged each other at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on January 15, 1967, with the Packers winning with a score of 35-10.

Has a team ever played a Super Bowl at home?
The Tampa Bay Bucs will be the first in history to do so on Feb. 7. Albeit in front of a small crowd, with only 22,000 in attendance because of Covid. The Los Angeles Rams in January 1980 played it in L.A., to be precise in Pasadena Township, part of the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, but at the Rose Bowl, not the Coliseum which was their home during the season.
Which city has hosted the most Super Bowls?
Miami leads with 11 (6 at the Dolphins’ current facility, 5 at the old Orange Bowl), followed by New Orleans with 10 (3 at Tulane Stadium and 7 at the Superdome), Los Angeles with 7 (5 at the Rose Bowl and 2 at the Coliseum) and Tampa, which will be home for the fifth time on Feb. 7.
Where will the next ones be played?
In February 2022 it will be the turn of Los Angeles’ new facility, SoFi Stadium, home of the Rams and Chargers. In 2023 it will be the turn of Glendale, Arizona, while in 2024 it will be back to New Orleans.

How is the venue chosen?
The city that intends to organize a Super Bowl submits its candidacy to the league, which with an advance that goes from 3 to 5 years decides the assignment. There are precise criteria that must be met, from the climate (the only outdoor one in a cold city was the one played in New York in 2014), to the hotel capacity, to the facility itself, which must be large enough and modern enough.
What is the name of the trophy that goes to the winning team?
The Lombardi Trophy, named after Vince Lombardi, legendary coach of the Packers. It’s packaged by Tiffany’s, is made of sterling silver, stands 56 cm tall and weighs 3.2 kg. It was born from a design made on a paper napkin made by Rozelle and Tiffany’s vice president, Oscar Riedner, during an aperitif. Would you like one too? Once upon a time you could try your luck by participating in a lottery that gave the few lucky winners the chance to buy two coupons at the “normal” price, which has now risen to $750, regardless of the location in the facility; now that too has been abolished.
