Sometimes in this column I like to go to different leagues and play a variety of markets, but other times I find myself just skimming the top-level coupons and spotting a price that feels a bit off and offers betting value. This was the case on Tuesday morning as I conducted research for the Wednesday column.
Since the beginning of the year, Bristol City has not lost a game. They are still in the FA Cup, have climbed to the middle of the table in the Championship, and may even have playoff aspirations. This season, Nigel Pearson’s squad could have a second-half surge that propels them into the top six seemingly out of nowhere, as is typical in this division.
Wigan have appointed a new manager in recent weeks, following the unsuccessful tenure of Koko Toure. The former Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool defender was relieved of his duties after less than two months without a single victory.
Since taking over, Shaun Maloney has steered the club to four of a possible six points. This victory over fellow relegation-threatened Huddersfield was a huge boost, but Bristol City are a superior team in much better form.
I’m a big believer in the short-term effect of a new manager, but this will be his third game and by far his toughest assignment since taking over at the DW. In the cup match against Manchester City, the Ashton Gate club’s players will compete for their positions.
It is unreasonable to anticipate a significant decline for Pearson’s team. To get even money on them winning the game feels large, as I would have expected the odds to be closer to 4/6, so I believe this is a value play for the day.
