Amanda Gorman, Biden’s poet of the oath, will be at the Super Bowl
The 22-year-old activist in the presidential inauguration will attend the most anticipated sporting event in the U.S., the Super Bowl, and read an essay dedicated to three people who showed commitment and solidarity during the pandemic.
It is the most awaited sporting event in the United States, but also the most watched television broadcast in the world: the Super Bowl, as we well know, is much more than a football match, it is a real event full of meanings, an important and enviable stage. It is no coincidence that among the protagonists this year there is also Amanda Gorman. After being the youngest poet to participate in a presidential inauguration, that of Joe Biden last January 20, and, before that, awarded in 2017 with the title of National Youth Poet Laureate, she is ready to collect a new record: take part in the ceremony preceding the Super Bowl.
It was announced by the NFL, the American National Football Association, which is in charge of organizing the event. The poet and activist will recite in front of the cameras a poem that aims to pay tribute to three people who served in the United States during the pandemic, becoming symbols of resourcefulness and dedication: teacher Trimaine Davis, head nurse Suzie Dorner and Marine veteran James Martin. “In these incredibly difficult times, Trimaine, Suzie and James each set an example of leadership and commitment. We are very grateful to honor them,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
The commitment of the NFL on the issues of unity and representation comes after the controversy that arose from 2016, when it had prevented some players, starting with Colin Kaepernick, to kneel during the national anthem in protest against the racist policies of Donald Trump. In recent years, the association has activated several inclusion programs and the choice of a personality like Gorman is another step in this direction. The Super Bowl 2021 will be played on February 7 in Tampa, Florida, with an audience reduced because of the coronavirus to only 22 thousand spectators, including 7500 health workers who have already been vaccinated in recent weeks. To animate the highly anticipated musical halftime this year is the Canadian artist The Weeknd, but the risk that the revelation Amanda Gorman blatantly steals the scene is high.
